When Abdul-Jabbar purchased the property in Los Angeles, he was only beginning to enjoy his retirement, having retired in 1989.

Before temporarily returning to Los Angeles in 2000 to serve as an assistant coach for the Clippers, he was absent for a while in 1998 and 1999, when he accepted a position as an assistant coach at a high school in Arizona.

Following his 2001 home sale, Abdul-Jabbar joined the Oklahoma Storm as an assistant coach in 2002. From 2005 to 2011, he served as the Lakers’ assistant coach for a longer period of time.
