In San Francisco, USA, Stephen Curry has accomplished numerous feats in basketball, yet one milestone has eluded him: representing the USA at the Olympic Games.
However, that is set to change in approximately four months as he prepares to take the court at the Men’s Olympic Basketball Tournament Paris 2024.
With the Golden State Warriors, Curry boasts an impressive resume, including two FIBA Basketball World Cup victories in 2010 and 2014, as well as multiple NBA MVP honors and four NBA championships. Despite these achievements, Curry has yet to participate in the Olympics. This summer, however, the influential player of his generation has made the decision to once again don his National Team jersey.
Curry was among the players recently announced by USA Basketball to compete at this summer’s Olympics in France.
“I’m beyond excited,” he expressed to the NBA on TNT. “I’ve played in two World Cup teams, gaining that international experience. However, I missed out in 2016 and 2021. So, I’m thrilled about this opportunity.”
While his specific role with the national team this summer remains uncertain, there’s a strong possibility that his coach at Golden State, USA’s Steve Kerr, will strategically deploy Curry as the Americans strive for a fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal.
“Obviously, we have an amazing team,” Curry emphasized. “I trust Coach Kerr and his approach, backed by a great coaching staff. Representing your country in Paris at the highest level is an unparalleled experience.”
During the NBA TNT interview with Charles Barkley, a member of the 1992 Dream Team, Curry reflected on the opportunity to finally make his Olympic debut.
“I understand that the Olympic buildup and experience, like what the Dream Team had, is something you can’t fully grasp until you’re in it – the Opening Ceremony, witnessing other athletes compete,” he remarked. “Our goal is to secure the gold, and for me, this being my first experience, I’m incredibly excited. At 36, I’m unsure if I’ll have another chance, so this year is truly special.”
In their recent string of Olympic victories, the USA has faced formidable challenges, including thrilling Gold Medal Games against Spain in 2008 and 2012, as well as a notable showdown against France in Tokyo three years ago.
“USA will kick off their quest for a fifth consecutive gold medal in Group C, facing off against Serbia, South Sudan, and the winner of the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament on July 7 in San Juan. Puerto Rico, Lithuania, Italy, Mexico, Bahrain, and Côte d’Ivoire will vie for that spot.
“We have a formidable team,” Curry remarked in a separate interview on NBA TV. “We recognize that nothing is guaranteed. It’s crucial to maintain the right energy and focus, so I’m eagerly anticipating the journey ahead. This summer promises to be exciting.”
At 36 years old, Curry continues to prove himself as one of the premier players in basketball. His recent accolade as the 2023-24 Kia NBA Clutch Player of the Year further solidifies his status. He clinched the award by surpassing former USA star DeMar DeRozan and Canadian standout Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
With an impressive 189 points, Curry topped the league in clutch scoring, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure in crucial moments – scoring points in the final five minutes of fourth quarters or in overtime, with the game’s score differential being five points or less.
