Giannis Antetokounmpo was prevented from signing an Adidas shoe contract by brotherly love.
The “Greek Freak” revealed in a recent podcast that he declined to sign with Adidas since his brother Thanasis did not have a contract, choosing instead to go to Nike, who was happy to include his brother in a deal.
Bleacher Report claims that older brother Giannis gave a detailed explanation of everything during a recent episode of The Thanalysis Show.
“When he presented the contract to me, I thought, ‘OK, that’s great, but where’s my brother’s?'” stated Antetokounmpo. “We’re not going to sign your brother’s today,” he said. After you sign yours, your brother will be brought over in a week to sign his. And I said, “Oh, no, thank you.”
He would have been happy to sign anything when he first met with the representative because he knew that his family needed money, but the only way his signature would have been linked to that contract was if his brother had been involved.
However, the representative agreed to the concept when he brought the identical proposal to Nike, stating that he and his brother were a package offer.
When it was finally my chance to talk, I emphasized that it was crucial for it to be a family affair. “You take my family, my brother, and my mother with me. And her response was, “Yeah, okay, whatever.” We joined Nike after that, and she has supported us ever since.
When Giannis signed with Nike in 2013, he was by no means a lock. Nike has benefited from Adidas’ loss since “The Greek Freak” has become a household nаme thanks to his two NBA MVP wins, a best-selling book, and a successful film.
