Phoenix guard Eric Gordon on the Suns’ small-ball lineup: ‘Who’s Jokić gonna guard?’

The small-ball lineup that the Phoenix Suns used in their tҺrilling comeback win on Tuesday, according to guard Eric Gordon, “will create a mismatch for any other team.”

Kevin Durant played center for the Suns, while Gordon closed for Jusuf Nurkic.

The trio of Devin Booker, Bradley Beal, and Grayson Allen was the main contributor as they overcame a 22-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat the Sacramento Kings.

“Everyone can ball, dribble the ball, and make the right plays, which is the key to making that work from an оffensive standpoint,” Gordon said to Burns & Gambo of Arizona Sports on Wednesday. “When playing defense with small ball, you have to make the right plays.”

Gordon noted that the Suns’ use of the small-ball lineup on Tuesday night served as the “ideal illustration” of when to do so.

He added that although the Suns were attempting to place him in the pick-and-roll to extend the floor, Sabonis was unable to decide who to defend.

Gordon said, “You’re trying to take away the big man from the other team.” “Man, it’s hard to go small-ball against us because who’s gonna guard KD? That’s why they had to sub out Sabonis for a short while last night.”

“You’re taking away from the other team, and because we have every player in that group who can handle the ball and shoot, it’s like, okay, choose your pоisоn. The other team must come up with many strategies to attempt to slow us down.

Gordon also said that the small-ball lineup might be used against other teams and may cause a mismatch when facing teams like the Denver Nuggets and Nikola Jokić, the current champions.

“We may not always be able to match up one-on-one if we play a somewhat similar style like we did last night,” Gordon said. “Jokić needs to be covered differently, but aside from that, who is he going to guard?”
