Jimmy Butler of the Miami Heat may not play enough games to make any All-NBA team under the league’s new participation criteria.
Butler has missed 12 of Miami’s 36 games due to a right MP joint sprain and will miss his fifth straight game on Wednesday when the Heat play the Oklahoma City Thunder at the Kaseya Center.
Butler made a strong statement to reporters on Tuesday regarding whether league honors were his first priority after his ιnjury.
“Your thoughts? You think I’m concerned about rewards? The only prize I care about is those [championship] banners, Butler told the Miami Herald. “That’s all I told Spo [Erik Spoelstra] and Pat [Riley]…. I’ll help us get that.”
Butler will not be eligible for All-NBA if he misses 18 games under the new rule. Butler can miss just five of Miami’s last 46 games.
Butler’s speech reflects Heat culture, which emphasizes selflessness, professionalism, and NBA championships. In 24 games this season, the Heat star is averaging 21.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.5 assists while shooting 46.4%.
Miami (21-15) is fourth in the Eastern Conference after winning six of their past 10 games.
