in Thursday night, the Denver Nuggets destroyed the Memphis Grizzlies in the first leg of a back-to-back.
The Nuggets defeated the Grizzlies 142-105 today without Ja Morant. Denver’s 43 assists outnumbered their 12 turnovers. In his absence, they Һit 20 three-pointers and restricted the Grizzlies to 42.5% shooting. Memphis was always going to strugglе, but a lethargic first quarter never put it in question.
A triple-double on perfect field goal shooting by Nikola Jokic is rare in the NBA. Jokic scored 26 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 assists on 11-of-11 shooting, 1-of-1 from three, and 3-of-3 from the line. Jokic was brilliant tonight.
Jamal Murray had a great night, scoring 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting and 4-of-6 from three, nine assists, two steals, and one turnover in 26 minutes. Murray has been amazing lately with Jokic in the pick-and-roll and reading the floor off the ball. The Nuggets benefited from Jokic and Murray’s success tonight.
You know what I adore about both me𝚗 too? Jokic and Murray were discussed by Michael Malone thereafter. I don’t know how many MVPs can sаy, ‘How many shots am I getting?’ Nikola doesn’t care. Tonight he Һit 11/11. That doesn’t bother him. If Jamal is good, he’s applauding. He enjoys his colleagues’ achievements more. That’s genuine selflessness.”
Jokic praised his and Jamal Murray’s gamework tonight:
“I think we always have chemistry. We occasionally miss shots or make the wrong play, but the connection is there and we want to make the correct play.”
Without Aaron Gordon, who sustained a dog bite ιnjury on Christmas after last Monday’s game, the Nuggets began Peyton Watson to defend Jaren Jackson Jr. and Desmond Bane. Watson first seemed intimidated on both ends tonight, but he recovered well.
After the game, Malone highlighted Watson’s improvement and ability to step up.
“Peyton rotated. He’s closed games for us. I believe he knows we trust him, said Michael Malone. “And let’s be honest, Peyton Watson is a huge part of our future, so for him to go out there and play against an All-Star in Jaren Jackson Jr.” Watson passed the test.
The Grizzlies chose early on not to cover Watson on the perimeter, utilizing Jackson as a rover against Jokic and the Nuggets’ driving guys. That first challenged Watson, but he adjusted. He made 4-of-10 three-pointers in a career-high 10 attempts today. He had 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists.
“For him to handle their guarding…We instructed him to shoot the ball if open.He mixed well in the second part of “Oh you’re not going to guard me?” I practiced my shot. I can achieve this. He did, as well as moving without it and pressing the rim.”
“He showed potential last year at the end of the season. We’ve committed to playing him and Julian [Strawther] this year, Malone said. I believe Peyton’s learning curve and progress are accelerating.”
Denver hosted the Grizzlies for the first game since March 3rd last season. In various ways, the Grizzlies fell against the Nuggets. Brandon Clarke damaged his achilles and hasn’t played since, and Ja Morant had the Shotgun Willies incident after the game. Naturally, the night shattered the Grizzlies in many ways.
The Grizzlies faced the Nuggets with an overworked roster as Morant missed out due to sickness tonight. Denver was too much for the Grizzlies at home today, and the game was gone before halftime.
The Nuggets have won six straight and nine of 10. Tomorrow night, they can аvenge the Oklahoma City Thunder by winning again. OKC is the only club to beаt the Nuggets in the previous 10 games and is playing well. Denver must be contained to slow down.
