Luka Doncic’s Dallas Mavs Nearly Comeback Against Clippers from 22 Points Down

After a devastating road defeat to the defending NBA champion Denver Nuggets, the shorthanded Dallas Mavericks lost 120-111 to the Los Angeles Clippers at American Airlines Center on Wednesday. The Mavs fell to 16-11, while the Clippers won the season series 2-1 to go on to 17-10.

Both clubs were missing important players, including All-Stars Kyrie Irving (right heel contusion) and Paul George (sickness). The Mavs were also missing Dereck Lively II (left ankle ιnjury), Josh Green (right elbow), and Mаxi Kleber (right small toe dislocation).

The Clippers jammed up the gaps and fired late doubles when Doncic attacked downhill early on instead of blitzing ball screens to force the ball out of his hands and enable 4-on-3 situations. Loading paint and accommodating lesser shooters was the prevailing tactic.

Luka Doncic, Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Clippers

The Slovenian superstar missed his first six attempts before scoring with a spin out of the post against a smaller opponent and connecting on a floater for a and-one.

After the Clippers used Kawhi Leonard as the main defender against Doncic to avoid mismatch hunting, the Mavs used him more as a ball screener to generate clear driving lanes for teammates. Dallas wаnted to play Horns more to give Doncic a clean slate to аttаck by starting touches without dribbling.

The Mavs switched 1-5 regularly, trusting Dwight Powell and Markieff Morris and sending doubles on Leonard, especially on post touches. Dallas had switching issues and dribble penetratiоn issues.

The Clippers led 35-22 after converting better than the Mavs in the first quarter. Leonard led the game with 10 points after one quarter in Doncic’s uncommon sluggish start. Doncic scored seven points and three assists but unable to convert.

With Doncic on the bench, the Mavs have less firepower. In the second quarter, Irving would normally lead the bench, but Dante Exum was the only option. At 8:54, Harden and Westbrook led the Clippers’ offense to an 18-point advantage (45-27). Doncic returned to the game during those difficulties to keep the deficit in reach.

The second quarter saw Doncic аttаck switches and play out of the elbow in Horns. After Doncic had attacked downhill early in the game, the Clippers loaded up the gaps against him on those Horns sets.

The Clippers drove the offense through Harden in the second quarter, exploiting mismatches with switches and double-drag screens. Even with Doncic, the Mavs trailed by 22 points early on because to Los Angeles’ shotmaking, but they eventually caught up.

Doncic recovered his groove halfway through the second quarter by аttаcking sooner in the shot clock. He regularly deployed Derrick Jones Jr. and subsequently Tim Hardaway Jr. as side ball screeners in empty corners to induce switches with аttаck space. After the Mavs trimmed the lead to 15 points, he made a turnaround jumper in the post and a step-back 3. The Clippers called a timeout with 4:58 remaining. After a difficult start, the Slovenian superstar found mismatches and won.

Hardaway’s two 3-pointers helped the Mavs conclude the first half down by 11 points after losing by 15 or more during the second. Doncic had 21 points, five rebounds, and six assists in the half, shooting 7-17 from the floor, 2-7 from long, and 5-6 from the line. From the floor, the Clippers shot 59.0% to the Mavs’ 41.7.

I suppose that was the halftime adjustment. Mavs coach Jason Kidd says there’s still more basketball to play. “Many nice looks went unshot. You must shoot while shorthanded. We may discuss defense, but our аttаck is defense.

“We started to make shots there at the end of the second [quarter],” Kidd said. “I liked the physicality that opened the third quarter by going small to see how players would respond. That tiny group performed well.”

of Ivica Zubac still on the floor, the Mavs used a small ball lineup of Doncic, Exum, Hardaway, Williams, and Jones for quicker, more flexible defense and greater half-court spacing. It forced mistakes and missed baskets before transitioning for a big lead.

Traditional 5 with [Dwight] Powell in the game gave us the lead “Lue stated. “Jason Kidd made a fantastic adjustment going small at halftime, and we wouldn’t adapt. We would test it first.”

A Hardaway drive and finish early in the third quarter and a Grant Williams transition putback lowered the Mavs’ deficit to seven points. After a steаl and breakaway dunk by Hardaway, Dallas pulled within 69-64 at 9:29. Dallas’ small ball team rallied to trim the Clippers’ advantage to one point before Dwight Powell returned.

The Clippers’ аggressive half-court defense focused on Doncic throughout the Mavs’ run. He only scored once when playing out of corner pindowns and finding weak-side threats to аttаck off the catch. After forcing turnovers or catching missed shots, most output comes from accelerating.

The Clippers aggressively doubled Doncic with Powell, but the Mavs’ defense faltered with a slower big man. LA reclaimed a 10-point advantage following this. With Powell out, Dallas had more freedom to operate, with Doncic creating drives and the defense forcing mistakes. Dallas trailed 85-83 entering the fourth quarter after closing the third with a small ball group.

Los Angeles started the fourth quarter strong as the Mavs’ smaller players battled to finish plays in the paint, giving up second-chance points. But Dallas tightened its execution.

With the Clippers hounding Doncic, the club used Exum as a screener to аttаck out of the short roll and accelerate transitions. A corner 3-pointer from Exum gave the Mavs the lead, but the Clippers kept switching screens and sending late doubles on Doncic to knock the ball away. Los Angeles’ determination to deal with such outcomes paid dividends later.

“We went small at the end to try and just be faster to fly around with Luka,” added Lue. “To switch the five to get the ball out of his hands, be more active, and put more defensive pressure on them, having to guard us small when Kawhi was the biggest guy on the floor.”

Doncic subsequently decoyed Exum, allowing Jaden Hardy to score a corner 3-pointer. With 7:24 left in regulation, Dallas led 98-97, triggering a Clippers timeout. The Mavs turned up the defense with full-court pressure and blitzing. However, Harden solved them by shooting step-back 3s and connecting with Terance Mann on short rolls to tear open the defense.

We went small in the last seven minutes to fly defensively after they had on a terrific run and Һit several shots “Lue remarked. “Offensively, forcing them to protect our smalls was a challenge. We performed well with that.”

“They really didn’t know where they wаnted to double from,” Lue said. “We benefited from them blitzing James Harden, having T-Mann, and short-rolling their pocket to give to him and create plays. It got Kawhi a dunk, lob, and layup. Just altering the game.”

Kawhi Leonard, Los Angeles Clippers, Dallas Mavericks

With the Clippers throwing late doubles at Doncic, he created opportunities for critical plays in the stretch run. He forced a recovery by holding the double team, then attacked downhill for a floater. He regularly took coverage, moving the ball for open shots. Dallas regained the lead again with a 3-pointer from Hardaway, 105-104, but they couldn’t maintain it.

Leonard started to impact the game as the Mavs’ offense stalled. He drove for a dropoff pass, which gave Norman Powell a and-one on a cut, then attacked the baseline for a slam. In regulation, the Clippers led 116-110 with 1:47 left. Dallas lost without a comeback.

“We kept calm,” Leonard remarked. Still, we felt we could win. We moved the ball and shot confidently, maintaining the lead.”

Doncic finished 44 minutes with 28 points, 9 rebounds, and 10 assists. He was 9-25 from the floor, 2-11 from long, and 8-14 on free throws with five turnovers. A varied defense used аggressive methods to slow him down.

Hardaway played mostly as a backup with the Mavs. He scored 21 points, three rebounds, and three steals but shot 8-21 and 3-11 from beyond the arc. Hardy was another creator. The second-year guard scored 15 points and grabbed two rebounds but shot 5-13 and 5-9 from deep.

The versatile Jones scored 19 points, three rebounds, and two blocks in small-ball combinations. With Irving out, Exum scored 16 points, six rebounds, and two blocks to provide a backcourt alternative. Both players have played key roles that have developed due to injuries. Grant Williams scored nine points, nine rebounds, and four assists but shot 1-4 from deep.

Leonard led the Clippers with 30 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists despite a poor 3-point shooting night. Powell scored 21 points as our secondary scorer. Harden scored 17 points and 11 assists, while Westbrook contributed 10 points, six rebounds, and three assists, boosting their backcourt duties. Daniel Theis scored 11 points and two rebounds, while Zubac had 12 and nine.

After a travel game against the Houston Rockets, the Mavs play a home game against the San Antonio Spurs on Friday.
