Butler briefly left the Miami Heat for a ten-day promotional trip. He ended his mainland tour in Guizhou, a rural basketball capital, after Beijing, Taiyuan, Xi’an, Chongqing, and Guangzhou.

JB’s tour video of a fan unintentionally hitting him in the face with a sneaker went viral.

Butler was autographing shoes for fans at a Li-Ning event in Taiyuan when a fan threw a shoe up to be autographed and bounced it off his face (slide 5 above).

Butler laughed off his surprise, autographed the sneaker, and returned it to its owner.

“Probably my favorite part about the whole thing,” he joked on Instagram.

Jimmy Butler was the first NBA player to visit Guizhou, China’s “rural basketball” capital. Guizhou is home to the famous ‘CunBA’ basketball tournament—‘cun’ meaning ‘village,’ and ‘BA’ as in ‘NBA.’

Over a thоusand saw Butler dunk. After talking to admirers, 81-year-old Lu Dajiang gave him a cotton basketball at an elementary school as a sign.

Online critics questioned if cotton was the suitable present for a US black basketball star.

“Butler looks unsure about the cotton in his hand,” says one remark.

Another user said, “His face is like, hmmmm…”

Others supported the gift and refuted historical interpretations.

“Our cotton is a symbol of the wisdom, diligence and simplicity of the working people,” commented one user. It’s not about blооd, tears, or tyranny. This present is nice!”

“Those histories have nothing to do with us,” wrote another. “JB would be furious if a white person gave him that gift.”

Butler then visited Hong Kong, stopping at San Po Kong’s industrial/residential district to play with fans and give skills contest winners free Li-Ning shoes.

He said, “Always give all you have doing what you love. “Never let anyone tell you what you can or cannot do.”
