The pro-Pelicans fans at Smoothie King Center met star player Jared Morant with mixed emotions upon his return to the Grizzlies following a 25-game suspension, with the jeers being far louder than the applause.

The point guard received a mixture of jeers and cheers during his pregame introduction in his first game action since receiving a league ban for displaying a gun on an Instagram Live. This was Morant’s second suspension for doing so. ESPN reporter Marc Spears captured the incident on camera.

When Morant touched the ball for the first time during the start of the game, he was roundly jeered. He was eventually fouled while driving to the hoop.

As he walked to the free-throw line, the crowd continued to jeer at him. However, he made 1 of 2 attempts to score his first point of the year.

In the first half, the 24-year-old played 16 minutes and scored seven points on 3 of 8 from the field, three assists, one block, and one rebound.

According to the Associated Press, before Tuesday night’s game, Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins praised Morant for his efforts to collaborate with his teammates while serving a ban, including attending practices and video conferencing with players during games.

“We get one of our leaders back, one of our core players. The team’s fired up. I’m fired up,” Jenkins said. “He’s put in a lot of work since the start of the season, been around the team as much as he could.

“Super excited to see him go out there and just have fun. That’s what he and I have talked about,” Jenkins added. “Build chemistry with your teammates and just enjoy this opportunity to be back out on the floor.”

On Friday, Morant said therapy and self-reflection have helped make him a better person.

“I feel like I learned some stuff about myself during that process,” the two-time All-Star told reporters Friday. “Very eye-opening. Kinda gave me a new look on life with how I go about my days, how I carry myself.
