After a long road trip, the Lakers hosted the Knicks on Monday night before leaving again.
The Lakers raised a banner before the game to honor their In-Season Tournament win, but the Knicks won 114-109.
The game started with D’Angelo Russell and Donte DiVincenzo making 3-pointers. Since the Knicks were missing starting center Mitchell Robinson, the Lakers got the ball down low to Anthony Davis early, who was feasting.
After some expensive turnovers by L.A., the Knicks claimed their first lead at 15-14. Austin Reaves, as usual, came off the bench with a triple and a charge in his first minute. Knicks bench player Immanuel Quickley and Reaves drained triples to conclude the first quarter, giving New York a 35-27 lead into the second.
LeBron James started the second quarter with a layup after a quiet first quarter for the Lakers.
The Knicks’ Julius Randle started scoring from there, extending their lead to double digits. Taurean Prince Һit back-to-back triples, and Russell added one.
Davis then went on a tear, including hitting the buzzer with a midrange jumper to give the Lakers a 58-57 halftime lead.
James scored five straight for the Lakers to start the third quarter and then tossed a gorgeous alley-oop to Davis.
An intriguing third quarter saw many lead changes as each team scored and the other responded. That happened when Reaves Һit a triple and Jalen Brunson followed with one.
Knicks Һit the Lakers 12-2 to end the quarter and lead 90-80 going into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, Rui Hachimura Һit a deep shot and Reaves found a cutting LeBron to get L.A. within five. Darvin Ham took a much-needed timeout after Brunson and the Knicks restored their 10-point advantage with a fast run.
Davis and James’ thundering dunks after the stoppage cut the margin to four.
After a Knicks timeout though, Randle drilled a massive 3 and then Brunson scored inside to help the Knicks regain control. The Lakers lost due to missed late chances.
