Davis helps Lakers overcome James’ absence, send Spurs to 18th straight loss

The Los Angeles Lakers defeated Victor Wembanyama and San Antonio 122-119 on Wednesday, extending the Spurs’ franchise-record losing streak to 18. Anthony Davis had 37 points and 10 rebounds.

LeBron James missed the first of two straight games in San Antonio due to a left calf strain. Teams will play again Friday night.

San Antonio hasn’t won since Nov. 2; Wembanyama had 30 points, 13 rebounds, and 6 blocks. Keldon Johnson scored 28 and Malaki Branham 16.

Wembanyama’s 3-pointer over Davis trimmed the Lakers’ advantage to 115-110 with 1:29 left after the Spurs trailed by 20 early in the fourth quarter. Wembanyama scored one of two free throws to make it 117-116 with 22 seconds left.

Wembanyama fouled out for the first game in his career after putting his leg out on a failed 3-pointer with 8.8 seconds left and the Lakers ahead 119-116.

The NBA In-Season Tournament champion Lakers won for the fifth time in six games with 17 points from Taurean Prince. D’Angelo Russell scored 12 points and 10 assists, and Austin Reaves had 15.

Davis kept playing after rolling his left ankle on the Lakers’ first possession. Davis groaned on the baseline after missing a layup after spinning right to avoid Wembanyama. The Lakers took a timeout to check on Davis, who stretched and ran to release the ιnjury.

Davis scored 24 points in the first half on 10/15 shooting. With 3:57 left in the first half, he bullied Wembanyama under the hoop to score a monster one-handed slam on the rookie.

The final minute saw Wembanyama spin away from Davis under the rim for a one-handed dunk. The French No. 1 pick had two blocks and two dunks in the final 45 seconds of the first half.
