Magic Johnson is a basketball icon, but to his three chιldren, he will always be first and foremost a father

The 42-year-old son of the former point guard and his ex-girlfriend Melissa Mitchell was born. Along with his wife Earlitha “Cookie” Johnson, Magic is also father to two children: son EJ, 31, and daughter Elisa, 28.

“It’s all about you not trying to decide what your daughter or son should be or what you want them to become,” added the father. “It’s all about loving them no matter who they are, what they decide to do.”

Over the years, Magic and Cookie have experienced many joyful experiences with their loved ones, including a Mediterranean yacht cruise with their children and grandkids in July 2023. The NBA star posted an Instagram shot of the group posing on the boat’s deck, as well as a selfie of himself and Cookie.

Andre, EJ, Elisa, Lisa (our son-in-law), Gigi, and Avery (our granddaughters) are all coming out to join Cookie and me on the yacht. It was captioned “Magic” on the post.

What follows is a comprehensive profile of Magic Johnson’s three offspring.

Andre Johnson, 42 Magic’s sole kid, was born to his ex-girlfriend Mitchell on February 20, 1981.

Of Magic’s children, Andre is the most withdrawn. He has made a name for himself as a prosperous businessman and entrepreneur, having previously worked for his father’s investment company, Magic Johnson Enterprises, according to Me𝚗’s Health. In 2022, he received a promotion to executive vice president of business development at SimWin Sports, a virtual sports league.

Additionally, Andre and Mike Dupree co-host the podcast Please Elaborate, in which they discuss pop culture and current affairs.

He got married to Lisa in 2010, and the two of them now have two kids. Andre dressed up as Uncle Drew in 2022 to celebrate Halloween on Instagram with his family.

The CEO sent Magic a picture of himself and his family on Father’s Day in 2021. “I express my gratitude for being a wonderful father to Gigi and Avery as well as pop pop to us,” he said. “On your special day, I hope you get some much-needed rest because I love you.”

Earvin “EJ” Johnson III, age 31

Earvin “EJ” Johnson III was born on June 4, 1992, to Magic and Cookie Johnson. The two paternal ancestors of EJ are honored by the middle name EJ.

Magic and EJ have both expressed openly how difficult their transition was. In 2014, EJ told PEOPLE that although his parents “pretty much already knew” he was gay, they were still worried about the reaction of the community. He remarked, “My mom didn’t want me to be looked at closely.” “I simply told them that I will follow my own desires regardless of what others may say.”

EJ says of Magic, “He’s brave and strong enough to let the world know who he is,” and Magic says of EJ, “He saw me grow into myself, and we’ve really come full circle with each other.”

During an EJNYC episode, EJ disclosed that he was doubting his gender identity following Caitlyn Jenner’s 2016 transgender disclosures. I really thought about it,” EJ acknowledged. I simply asked myself, “Do I want to make the change?” to put it simply. Do I really think I would do this? I don’t, however, feel inadequate in any way. I don’t think I should take that action.

He has also talked about how his own life has been impacted by his father’s family. On Red Table Talk in 2018, EJ disclosed to Jada Pinkett Smith that a lot of people were just eager to meet Magic and spend time with him due to his family.

There has been conflict from the start. So many moving parts,” he cried out. “To start with, the celebrity thing: are you here to date me or are you attempting to date my dad? Me today either want to ride the wave, be bougie, go out and get their picture taken with you, and all that, or they just want to be in your life for a brief period of time before moving on to greener pastures elsewhere.

EJ has made no secret of his gender-neutral aesthetic or his desire to not undergo a transition in 2019. “I always tell people to go to where they want to be if they feel like they’re not in the right body,” he said. I don’t think changing my gender identity is necessary. I’m almost positive that I won’t. To put it plainly, I feel totally comfortable in my own skin. My body treats me well.

In the 2022 documentary film They Call Me Magic, Magic talks about EJ’s gender identity. According to EJ’s proud father, Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union’s parenting of their daughter Zaya was reportedly inspired by EJ’s story. Magic told EJ, “Be who you want to be, we gonna love you regardless, we gonna support you.”

Union was grateful that her family could depend on the Johnsons. “They gave us the instruction manual. And they have supported me at every turn,” the woman remarked. “And to see EJ do the same thing to Zaya, it was amazing,” Wade remarked

In a March 2023 PEOPLE interview, Magic extolled the virtues of EJ’s prosperous career. “I believe that EJ is truly in control of his career, making his own choices, and having a clear idea of what he wants to pursue.”

The athlete claims that his son “is so beloved all over the world.”

Magic celebrated EJ’s 31st birthday in June 2023 by sharing sentimental photos of himself with EJ and Cookie on Twitter.

“Happy Birthday to my son, EJ,” is the caption that Magic penned on his own. I am inspired by your originality and sincerity. The thing I like most about you is that you’re always true to yourself. “I hope today is amazing for you.”

In the meantime, Cookie celebrated EJ’s birthday by sharing several images of her child—both old and new—on Instagram. “Happy Birthday to my darling @ejjohnson_! “May the Lord look with favor upon you and shower His blessings upon you as you enter your 31st year,” she wished. “You are the love of my life.”

Elisa Johnson was born on December 21, 1994. Elisa was adopted by Magic and Cookie when she was just 3 days old.

In a 2016 interview, Elisa discussed her upbringing surrounded by celebrities with CR Fashion Book. The woman said, “I was born and raised in Los Angeles.” I was adopted when I was three days old, but even in my own family, I never felt different. I lived a typical Los Angeles life during my entire childhood and adolescence, which included frequenting the mall, dining at Sunset Boulevard restaurants, going on weekend trips to Malibu, and hanging out with my numerous close friends. I moved to Manhattan and everything is so much more convenient now.

Elisa and her pets were the targets of a home invasion in December 2018 while they were on vacation in California. She posted a photo of herself online, showing the world the wounds she received that evening. Women often have a tendency to be quite harsh with themselves. “I experienced a home invasion a few months ago, and the experience left me with severe scratches on my scalp,” the woman stated. I’ve been interacting with these characters because I’ve been so aware of them and how I’ve come across up until now. But I’ve come to realize that these marks are a testament to my past and my identity’s history. I am content with my physical state right now and I’m proud of my #selfhealing journey.
