According to a recent poll, the Los Angeles Lakers are the most popular sports club in America’s four major leagues. This is unfortunate for David Beckham and his young Inter Miami team.
The Lakers have won a comprehensive study of the top 120 teams in the MLB, MLS, NFL, and NBA. This suggests that the Lakers’ legacy has more clout than their recent struggles on the court.
Their NBA rival Golden State Warriors, who have recently had more success in the paint, finish in second in the rankings, with the New York Yankees coming in third.
From an MLS perspective, the report is less enlightening because, despite progressing in the US, soccer is still lagging far behind the traditional powerhouse sports in the nation.
In fact, the whole bottom half of the list is made up of soccer teams, with the Vancouver Whitecaps placing 120th overall. While Houston Dynamo are immediately above them, New York City, who won the MLS Cup in 2021 but are still struggling, is just above them.
